A sister to the Smeralda, the Costa Toscana became the fleet’s largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board. MSC’s ship Virtuosa, built in 2020, is one of the newer offerings by the Swiss-Italian cruise line and is tied for number fourteen on our list of the world’s biggest cruise ships. Built in 2016, Harmony of the Seas features 18 decks, more than 225,000 gross tons (about 10% smaller than Icon of the Seas) and can carry nearly 6,700 passengers when completely full. That’s good enough to make it the fourth-largest cruise ship in the world.

'Forever chemicals' in water; Olympians to get cash prizes; an 'agonizing' time on the world's biggest cruise ship; and ....
When it comes to the largest ships, Royal Caribbean is the undisputed leader with the six biggest cruise ships in the world. But the king of the fleet — and the largest cruise ship in the world — is Icon of the Seas. Here's a quick rundown of the world's biggest cruise ships by gross registered tons and maximum passenger capacity. Unsurprisingly, Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class dominate the top five in both categories. Perhaps more surprisingly, only two other lines join it on the winner's podium. Until Utopia of the Seas launches in 2024, Sun Princess will be among the twenty largest cruise ships afloat on the world’s oceans.
P&O Iona (P&O Cruises)
Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas was previously the world's largest cruise ship, starting in January 2022. Its first voyage was in March 2022, becoming the fifth member of Royal's Oasis-class ships. The aptly named Wonder of the Seas has 18 decks (16 guest-accessible decks), 2,867 staterooms and 19 pools. After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world.
P&O Arvia
This premier ship has 20 decks along with 2,614 staterooms and suites onboard. Costa Smeralda was named after a popular tourist destination in Sardinia. Icon of the Seas will also be the first ship in the cruise line’s fleet to run on liquefied natural gas and fuel cells, which are similar to batteries but do not need to be recharged. Water is the main byproduct of fuel cells—which combine oxygen and hydrogen to produce energy—which should help the ship reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry.
Symphony of the Seas
Onboard, passengers can find 16 guest decks, 2,747 staterooms and suites and 23 pools and whirlpools. Keep in mind that this list of biggest cruise ships in the world changes annually, as cruise lines update their fleets. While Royal Caribbean continues to dominate the top (and the bottom) of the list, new entries may surprise you. For example, Princess Cruises has a new ship on the list (the largest ever for that fleet), barely missing the top twenty. Keep in mind that this list of biggest cruise ships in the world changes annually as cruise lines regularly updating their fleets. Take a look at our list of the biggest cruise ships in the list below.
Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)
The world's biggest cruise ship propulsion system guarantees the perfect maneuverability by 3 rotatable Azipod thrusters (suspended under the ship's stern), each with a huge electric motor and a 6 m (20 ft) propeller. And in times of need - there are 18 lifeboats, each with a capacity of 370 people. Carnival Mardi Gras first debuted in 1972 and was a trailblazing ship.

If you notice, most of the largest ships on our list were built recently. This ship first began sailing in 2009 and set off the “arms race” of larger ships that continues today. The largest cruise ship in the world, Symphony of the Seas doesn’t just win awards — it wins over everyone who sets foot onboard. When it set sail in 1912, the ill-fated Titanic was the largest and grandest passenger vessel of its time. But, as of 2009, when Royal Caribbean debuted its first Oasis-class ship, the superlative applies to vessels more than five times Titanic's size. Harmony of the Seas is the third ship in the Oasis Class and is 226,963 GT’s.
Dating to November 2022, Carnival Celebration is the world's 14th biggest cruise ship. Join us as we take a special first look at Icon of the Seas, the World’s next biggest cruise ship. Royal Caribbean International has revealed the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas, the Icon of Vacations.
It made its maiden voyage in 2014 and holds 16 total decks (14 guest decks) and 2,094 staterooms. Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is the flagship of the Oasis class. It made its maiden voyage in 2009, offering 18 total decks (16 guest decks) along with 2,801 staterooms, almost 2,000 of which have balconies. Like the other Oasis-class ships, she’s organized into neighborhoods, but with the addition of an eighth unique section. This new neighborhood is dedicated to suite guests, with a plunge pool and bar as well as the suites-only Coastal Kitchen and Suites Lounge. But MSC Seascape isn’t all glitz and glamour—the family-friendly ship offers 13 pools and water features and more than 140,000 square feet (13006 m²) of public outside space.
Grandiosa also has some innovative environmental features, including systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 80%, and sulfur emissions by 97%. Cruisers can also wander the Galleria Virtuosa—the pretty indoor promenade with restaurants and shops features an arched ceiling with the longest LED dome at sea, presenting an ever-changing light display. There isn’t a vacation in the world that packs more adventure into one week than Oasis Class ships — Harmony®, Allure®, Symphony®, Oasis, Wonder® and Utopia of the Seas℠. The vessel is going on a seven-day island-hopping voyage in the tropics. MSC World America and Icon of the Seas, in particular, have several similarities, including public area venues segmented into "districts," as MSC Cruises calls them.
Royal Caribbean’s leaders say they view liquified natural gas as a “transitional fuel,” and that they hope to continue to reduce the environmental impact of their ships moving forward. The 365m-long (1,197 ft) Icon of the Seas has 20 decks and can house a maximum of 7,600 passengers. Oasis of the Seas was the first of its kind when she arrived at the end of 2009. The groundbreaking vessel was built at the STX shipyard in Turku, Finland. Oasis of the Seas also boasts features like the Zip-line and the AquaTheater. MSC World America will also have six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea.
MSC World Europa is the second largest cruise ship powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and takes the cruise line into a new era of sustainability, which it’s taking very seriously. The 7th world’s biggest cruise ship features more than 30 different dining venues and a new thrilling 250-foot Drop slide located aft of the ship. While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she’s also a revolutionary lady. The ship’s Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. CruiseMapper's list of biggest cruise ships includes all vessels with gross tonnage/volume over 150,000 GT-tons. P&O Cruises held its spot on the top ten list of largest cruise ships in the world with an aptly named ship.
Her Godmothers are Gloria Estefan, Michelle Kwan, Dara Torres, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Shawn Johnson, Jane Seymour and Daisy Fuentes. One of the most important cruise tips for vacationing on one of these big boats is to accept that you won’t be able to do it all on your first visit. Tied for eighth place is Costa Smeralda, a favorite of sustainability-minded cruisers. Smeralda was the first in Costa’s fleet powered by liquefied natural gas (sister ship Toscana now also shares this feature), a fuel source that reduces the ship’s environmental impact. Taking the crown as the 10th-largest cruise ship in the world is Arvia from P&O Cruises. Measuring just under 185,000 gross tons, it offer a similar design to ships like Costa Smeralda and Carnival Celebration, but don’t think these ships are all the same.
Currently the largest cruise ship in the World is Wonder of the Seas by Royal Caribbean International. She is an incredible 235,600 gross tones and is part of the popular Oasis Class and can hold a total of 7,084 passengers. When she is completed Icon of the Seas (shown above) will be joining our list when she enters service in January 27, 2024. She will then take her place as the largest cruise ship at 250,800 gross tonnage. Today’s cruise lines are building bigger and better cruise ships regularly.
Therefore, if you purchase a shore excursion for $200 and later see the price has dropped to $150, you can cancel and rebook the excursion with no penalty. You can filter excursions by activity level, duration, and interest to find the excursion that fits your needs best. Outside of the behind-the-scenes tour, you may also find activities like a sushi making class available to book. This is where you can book the “All Access Ship Tour,” which brings passengers to crew-only areas of the ship like the galley, engine control room, laundry room, and bridge. If one person in a cabin purchases a Deluxe Beverage Package, all adults in the room must also purchase the package. That being said, Royal Caribbean often makes an exception to this rule if the second adult in a room does not consume alcohol. Then, be prepared to show your boarding pass (aka SetSail Pass) to the crew members on the mobile app when you arrive at the cruise terminal for check in. Once you are onboard the ship, you’ll find a SeaPass card for each member of your party inside your stateroom. After the check in process is completed, you should be able to access more activities in the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner. On our last cruise, some of the onboard activities opened up about a week after check in. So, I suggest checking the mobile app each day to see if anything new appears. Even though the check-in process is really quick and easy, we would like to mention a few tips.
Our goal has been to provide our readers with expansive coverage of all aspects of the Royal Caribbean experience. On the Order History page, click on “View Details” on the add-on you’d like to cancel. You’ll then see the option to cancel the purchase and you will be refunded the amount paid. Head to the back of Deck 12 to grab some famous Hater Tots or a Moo-burger, a cocktail, and enjoy the expansive ocean views as the sea spreads out before you. The Pearl pulled out to sea leaving Miami behind for the open seas. The weather was beautiful with sunny and 70-degree weather for the group photo that was taken with everyone onboard the top deck as the ship set sail. “As a man who’s been afraid of sharks since he first saw Jaws in 1975, I’m gonna do my best to make sure none of us get eaten on the Cruise Askew! "As a man who's been afraid of sharks since he first saw Jaws in 1975, I'm gonna do my best to make sure none of us get eaten on the Cruise Askew," Smith told Cruise Critic.

They did a cold read of a scene from the movie, which Jason had not seen before the cruise. It was very fun to see unpublished work being read live onboard for the first time in front of a live audience. It was a continual reminder of the brilliance of Kevin Smith’s writing chops. In all honesty I wasn’t familiar with Jay and Silent Bob or the Askewniverse until six weeks before the cruise. I’m not sure how I missed all these cult classics in the 90’s when I was in college but I put myself through a crash course of movie viewing and research to make sure I was prepared for the voyage.
It's the irreverent answer to all the plain, boring entertainment shows out there, and its audience just keeps growing. The voyage is the latest in a long line of themed cruises offered by Sixthman, including The Broadway Cruise 2023, Coheed and Cambria's S.S. Neverender cruise, Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea, and Flogging Molly's Salty Dog Cruise. Part of Sixthman's growing lineup of theme cruises created in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line, the "Jay and Silent Bob Present Cruise Askew" voyage will set sail February 23-26, 2024 from Miami aboard Norwegian Pearl, with a single call on Nassau, Bahamas. The Manual Payment Plan allows guests to manually make installment payments on their cruise over time.
The date that you place your reservation will dictate your minimum deposit amount after which you would be required to make any future payments according to this schedule. Past due payments are subject to a $35 late fee. Fat Man Beyond was next, a podcast with Kevin and Marc Bernardin. In the podcast the pair covers current events in movies and comic books. When asked about who gets to see and make decisions on scripts, the audience was told that Scott is the first one who sees the script, and then Jordan or Liz read the script and tell Kevin if the script is feasible. Next up was the Plus One podcast featuring Kevin Smith and Jen Schwalbach Smith, who have been married for 24 years.

Later in the day, once we were back on the Pearl. We attended a wine tasting with Trevor Fehram who played Elias in the Clerks film series and his wife, Renee Humphrey of Mallrats sampling 4 different wines with guests. The couple shared stories from their adventures together during the event in the Spinnaker Lounge. Renee works with her brother at his winery Eric Kent Wine Cellars. She hand-selected wines from the Norwegian collection for fans to sample during the tasting. Soul Asylum led by lead singer Dave Pirner played their biggest hits including “Black Gold.” I met several super fans who joined the cruise just to see the band perform live during their two appearances throughout the weekend.
The Jay and Silent Bob Get Old podcast started as a podcast about Jason’s sobriety as a weekly check in. At the time of the podcast onboard the ship, he was 13 years, 7 months, and 3 weeks sober. He also said that there are AA meetings on the boat and that he will be attending them while onboard during the cruise. The Jay and Silent Bob Cruise Askew made its debut voyage from February 23rd through the 26th aboard the Norwegian Pearl with Sixthman. The cruise began in Miami, Florida and sailed all the way to Nassau, Bahamas. The experience was hosted by Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and all their friends from the View Askewniverse.
With a morgue on board they can keep the body in good condition until reaching a port. Cruise ships are usually laid out with a center promenade area that includes indoor things like the casino, a center bar, restaurants, and shopping. Then there is the pool deck area that’s located at the top of the ship. These two areas are where passengers spend the most time outside the cabin. Many cruise lines — including Carnival and Royal Caribbean — allow you to bring on non-alcoholic beverages. So if you can’t live without your Diet Coke or want to have some Gatorade for the kids, bring it with you.
Go to Speciality Restaurants the first day
This list varies from relatively small tips to make your cruise a little more comfortable all the way to big secrets that the cruise lines don’t like to talk about. And while experienced cruisers may know some of the things on this list, you can rest assured everyone reading will learn at least a few helpful hints. Whether it’s your first sailing or your 50th, there are always new cruise tips to learn for when you take your trip. That’s why we’ve rounded up a staggering 107 of the best cruise tips, secrets and freebies for you to enjoy. Some cruisers also swear by bringing magnets to ships to affix dinner invitations, excursion tickets and other important papers to their cabin walls. Walls on ships often are made with metal (even if they look like wood, thanks to faux wood veneers) and will hold a magnet.
Read over prohibited items
Save yourself from walking into furniture and stubbing your toe by packing a simple plug-in nightlight. It’s especially helpful if you’re in an interior cabin where there are no windows to provide outside illumination. Just know that cruise itineraries can change for any number of reasons. Whether it be an issue with the ship, weather, or even riots in port (yes, this has happened).
Don’t Hang Things to Dry on the Balcony
There’s no pressure to do everything as a group, though, and the joy of a cruise ship is that it’s safe for all ages. Most of us take photographs and videos, but thinking of other ways you could document your vacation is one of the best cruise tips to help you remember your vacation. You could pack a sketch pad and pencils and give drawing a try—nobody will judge if you can only manage a stick figure.
But booking tours through your line isn't the only option, and it's not always the best option. Connect your credit card to your onboard account to make shipboard charges for everything from beverages and specialty dining bookings to shore excursions and spa treatments. Having your account set up beforehand also eliminates having to revisit the Guest Relations desk at the end of your voyage to settle the balance. Cruise ships offer shore excursions, essentially tours that take place in each port. Like many cruise lines, Royal Caribbean will offer you a bonus if you book a cruise while on a ship.

Cruising during hurricane season: What to know — and should you go?.
If you arrive and the beds aren’t how you wanted, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean you’ll have to sleep in the same bed as your friend or sleep apart from your spouse. Simply ask the room steward and they can put the beds how you want them.
If you do have to go to ask something about a reservation or your account, try to time your visit to off hours (the desk is open 24 hours a day). Times like just before dinner can see long lines, when you’d rather be out enjoying yourself. Early in the morning (before 8 a.m.) and late at night (after 11 p.m.) are the best times to see the shortest lines. We all know drinking is part of cruise culture, but the cost can soar quickly. That’s why it’s a good idea to head to port if you want to get your money’s worth. Most of the party bars near the cruise terminals will have drink specials designed to get you in the door.
Tipping Extra for Great Service Onboard
There’s no real cut-off on what is a considered a boat, versus a ship — other than ships are known as large ocean-going vessels. There’s no doubt that the size and scale of any cruise ship you sail will definitely put them firmly in the “ship” category. If you’re worried about sounds traveling through the walls, you should be. To be clear, the walls are not paper thin, so you won’t hear the cabin next to you watching a TV at a normal volume. But if you are the type that makes a lot of noise (ahem… enjoying your vacation with your partner, perhaps?), then you should try to keep it down. You’ll also be able to hear people in the halls through the door.
With these deals, you pay a bit extra, but then you get more included in your fare (such as Princess Plus). This can include Internet access, drink packages, your onboard daily gratuity, and other perks. What’s often the case is that the price for the upgrade is significantly less than what you’d pay for these items individually. If you plan to buy them anyway, a package is likely worth the money. It’s not always the case, but sometimes you’ll run into discounts around the ship if you buy when the ship is in port. For instance, maybe it’s a spa session that has a slight discount if you book a service while the ship is docked.
Finally, with high daily prices, you usually have to drink 7-10 drinks each and every day you are on the cruise to come out ahead. Not only does it come in handy should you need to leave the ship early due to an emergency, but it can also save you time. These days many ports use facial recognition matched with your passport for entering the country. Those with birth certificates sometimes still wait in line to be checked by an officer. When you go through check-in, you’ll receive the key to your room.
And even if you just misplace it, losing a passport is a major ordeal. That’s why we like to put our passport in our cabin safe and carry a photocopy of the ID page with us in port or just use a driver’s license. Keep this in mind and double-check the itemized receipt before you sign as there is often another line for write-in tips. Unless the service was simply above and beyond, there is no reason to give a second tip on your drink.
With fewer people on the ship, prices can be cut to entice demand. We’ve heard way too many horror stories of cruise passengers forgetting to turn off their phone’s data and then coming home to huge bills for international roaming. I have a small "go bag" of over-the-counter medicines that I throw into my suitcase for every cruise that contains everything from cold medicine to seasickness pills. If you only follow one piece of advice in this story, it should be this one.
Cruise lines know you're a captive audience and price their shipboard stores accordingly. Be sure to pack anything you think you might need for these first hours of your cruise in your carry-on bag. Carnival adds an 18% service charge to your bill whenever you order a drink at a bar or pay for a meal at an extra-charge restaurant. The doors are sometimes locked at night or in high winds, so try again later if you can't get through. Purchase a Wi-Fi plan, and you can text, browse the internet and post to social media.
I love Sanna’s cruise reviews which provide a view into Vegan dining, as well as provide other helpful dietary and allergy information. In addition to her blog you can also follow her Facebook page. As well, if you forget anything from water shoes to cold medicine, wait until the ship gets into port. These items are for sale on the ship, but they are extremely expensive (we’ve seen cold medicine for nearly $18 a bottle).
You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help. Most major cruise lines also offer the opportunity for pre or post-cruise land packages that will take you by bus or train to destinations in Southcentral and Interior Alaska.
Alaska Cruise Highlights By Month
Fortunately, you don’t need to sweat too hard about that last one as there’s no bad month to do an Alaska cruise. On top of that, you can anticipate significantly less rain and fog, which helps with comfort and visibility. Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.
Expedition Cruises: Get Up-Close-and-Personal With Nature
You’ll enjoy wildlife viewing, warmer temperatures, and daylight returns to more typical hours. However, the dry season has ended, so rainfall will begin to increase as the month progresses. The spring and summer months are when nearly all cruise ships visit each year.
The 49th state's snowy, cold and dark winters are not conducive to cruising. Just as Norwegian Cruise Line kicks off the 2024 Alaska cruise season in April, it’s the last cruise line to set sail in the state, and the only one to sail in October. The seven- and nine-day itineraries sail roundtrip from Seattle, and a recent search found fares more than 80% off published fares, starting at $499 per person. Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge sets sail for the first time in Alaska this year and has four six- and seven-night itineraries in September, starting at $599 per person.
Best Alaska Cruises for Different Travelers
Cruising to Alaska in September has many benefits of the peak season (milder weather and good wildlife viewing) with less expensive prices and fewer tourists. Just remember our earlier reminder that you are visiting the world’s largest temperate rainforest and enjoy the lush greenery. You’ve got about a 50/50 chance of getting rained or snowed on during excursions. You’ll be very happy if you purchase a quality raincoat and pack clothing you can add or remove in layers. On Winter Solstice (December 21 or 22), the state breaks out of its winter hibernation and begins gaining a few minutes of sunlight each day. By the time Summer Solstice occurs (June 20,21, or 22), travelers to Juneau, Alaska, a common port, will experience a day with 19 hours of sunlight.
We always recommend that you dress in layers to prepare for whatever weather comes your way. To help you get ready for your awe-inspiring adventure, learn about Alaska cruise temperatures by month. In late June through mid-August, brown bears and moose come out to feed in ponds, lakes, and along rivers. You may see beluga whales, humpback whales, or pods of orcas who frequent Alaskan waters in the summer, as well as seals and dolphins. Throughout your journey, your captain will position the ship for best viewing from the top deck or your private balcony. If you prefer warmer temperatures, ranging from 50° to 70° Fahrenheit, and longer days with up to 22 hours of sunlight, a summer Alaskan cruise might be the perfect choice.
The Magic of Alaska’s Summer Sun
Carnival has 14-day Alaskan cruises departing from Seattle and Long Beach in late April. Weather, ocean conditions, and limited sunlight make winter cruising to Alaska impossible. October is one of the wettest months in Alaska, so prepare for low clouds and rain. Alaska weather in October is manageable if you pack the right gear and protective clothing.
Alaska Cruises: Everything You Need to Know for a Perfect Bucket-List Adventure
You’ll be able to choose from a huge number of shore excursions from the cruise lines, including cruisetours from Princess Cruises and Holland America Line at Denali National Park. The best time to cruise Alaska is in May or June, at the beginning of the cruise season. Alaska’s cruise season has always been short, peaking quickly at the height of the summer months and then done by early fall.
That being said, traveling anytime during cruise season will offer epic views of landscape and wildlife, no matter where you travel. Alaska’s summer cruise season is a spectacular window of opportunity, with peak popularity between June and August. During these months, the Last Frontier comes alive in all its glory, offering an array of options for visitors.
Not only is the weather better, you get more hours in the day in the late summer. While daylight hours begin declining in September, they’re near their peak in mid-summer. On top of that, during the late summer and early fall, you will have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights in all of their glory.
In addition, sailing in the shoulder season does not necessarily mean there won’t be crowds onboard. While it’s possible the ship will not be sailing at 100% capacity, it’s unlikely you will encounter an empty ship. Plus, Royal Caribbean will adjust prices according to demand, so if a shoulder season cruise is not selling well, prices may drop until more people book the cruise.
Starting in 2024, Uncruise Adventures will be offering a winter cruise, where winter sports and northern lights viewings are all part of the package! Running February through March, this is a great option for travelers looking to experience Alaska during the winter months. Many cruise lines also travel to additional locations such as Sitka, Hoonah/Icy Strait Point, and Haines. Programs like Princess Cruises' Cruisetours take the stress out of planning on-shore excursions and curate incredible itineraries for extensive, luxurious travel across the state. Tell a sun-worshiper that you’re taking an Alaska cruise and they’ll raise an eyebrow.
Many cruise lines also have limited early cruise ships departing for Alaska in April. Norwegian Cruise Lines has the first departures of the season in early April from Seattle. Likewise, while weather should be colder during the shoulder seasons of May and September, Alaska’s weather is quite unpredictable.
July and August are considered peak seasons to cruise to Alaska for good reason. These are the months when all good things combine to create the optimal Alaskan experience. Weather is a pretty big consideration when it comes to booking an Alaskan cruise. If you have a low tolerance for cold weather, cruising Alaska during the warmest months of July and August is a better choice. Because they don’t migrate, you have a great chance of viewing these 1000+ pound, 10-foot-long animals on rocks near the shorelines as you cruise. As the month progresses, temperatures rise slightly, and daylight hours increase.
