The lineup is yet to be announced but it’s bound to have some of your favorites included and hopefully a few choice discoveries that you’ve never heard of before. Cruise to the Edge travels round trip from Miami to Harvest Caye and Roatan on March 27, 2020. The five-night prog rock cruise will take place on Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Pearl.

In addition to the four main headliners, some of the biggest buzz on the ship was generated by a train – Big Big Train to be exact – making its Cruise debut after a brief initial tour of the States. Expectations ran high, yet were met and exceeded during the band’s initial theater show which will likely go down as one of the triumphs in CTTE history. Receiving a standing ovation after nearly every song, the band seemed on fire, led by new singer Alberto Bravin who played multiple instruments as he ran around the stage and through the audience.

I was seated alongside several members of The Flower Kings, who were clearly proud of their compatriot’s efforts. Cell-phone torches were raised by hundreds of hands during ‘We All Need Some Light’ and it became clear that any band wishing to better this performance by the co-headliners, would have to pull out some miracles. Just as this show was ending, French proggers Klone took the pool stage by storm and captivated a new audience to their heavy melodic sound.

Concerts are usually happening concurrently so passengers can come and go to shows as they please and often hard choices must be made about which band to see and which to miss…until their next set. For your favorite bands you may want to make sure to see both of their sets, whereas you may just dip in for 15 minutes of a new discovery before heading on to other delights. Even finding time to stop for a proper meal in one of the many dining establishments can be tricky; for many passengers, the music takes precedence and they make due with quick stops at the buffet restaurant.

Review: Cruise to the Edge returns with 5 days of diverse progressive rock!

The first port stop on CTTE 2022 is the Private Isle of Labadee, the ultimate private destination for cruisers, offering adventure, exploration and relaxation amongst its many bars and pristine waters. Vacationers can amp up the adrenaline on the Dragon’s Tail Coaster, a thrilling 30-mile-per-hour ride with incredible views of the island. For more action, adventurous passengers may choose to strap on a helmet and harness and soar 500-feet down on the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line, the world’s longest zip line over water. In addition, there are plenty of exciting options to choose from, including wave jet rides, parasailing, snorkel safaris, kayak tours, and much more.

Consider booking a Barefoot Beach Cabana, which has several types of cabanas with privacy options, or being close to the action, there is sure to be something for everyone. The newly amped up Mariner of the Seas is packed with more ways to play on the most maxed-out short getaway ever. When the sun goes down, the night heats up with epic prog performances on stages throughout the vessel. Combined with some of the best food and service afloat, Cruise to the Edge is truly the greatest prog-rock show on earth and is a can’t-miss event for prog enthusiasts throughout the world. Artist-focused activities like live interviews, Q&As and surprise collabs will take place onboard in addition to daily and nightly live performances. Plus, a pre-cruise on-land concert is scheduled the night before the start of the sailing.

‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ made a re-appearance in the middle of “1985” and the crowd sang along with gusto before giant crowd balloons bounced around the room. The band knelt before the audience as they received a standing ovation. Having previously played in the 2014 Cruise with UK, Alex Machacek (and his band ‘Fat’) played a great jazz-rock set to a relatively small crowd.

Featuring a minimum of 35 bands with a full schedule of daily performances taking place everywhere from the ship's theater to the poolside stage, this cruise gives prog rock fans a chance to mix and mingle with stars of the subgenre. The fifth and final day was a port day at Coco Cay – a tourist’s paradise of pools, palms and patios. Proggers mingled easily with passengers from another ship and the beautiful day went very quickly.

The utterly dedicated crowd refused to be forced inside by the gale-force wind, and their fortitude allowed them to witness a triumphant set from Poland’s best. The lineup includes returning progressive acts Adrian Belew, Martin Barre, The Flower Kings, Protocol, PFM, Airbag, and Baraka, alongside cruise debuts by Gryphon, and Lonely Robot. The event also features heavy metal bands Symphony X, Haken, and Queensryche as well as AOR group Flying Colors. Port Canaveral, FL (June 9, 2021)─Cruise to the Edge, the world’s greatest progressive rock experience, has announced the artist line-up for its 7th annual voyage, next May 2nd-7th. Cruise to the Edge, the world’s greatest progressive rock experience, has announced the artist line-up for its 7th annual voyage, next May 2-7. Cruise to the Edge is marketed as the "world's largest prog rock music festival," with a packed schedule of concerts featuring prog rock greats as well as up-and-coming performers.

Transatlantic’s second show (which started 45 minutes late) featured all of ‘The Absolute Universe’ (an extra-extended version for blu-ray.) Roine Stolt’s voice was by this point quite ravaged and the other band members (mainly Ted Leonard) admirably covered for him in the higher vocal department. Mike Portnoy gave Ted Leonard an on-stage pat on the back for his extra vocal effort, almost every seat in the theater was filled and everyone in the audience was enthralled by the delivery of this mammoth album, which takes on a new life when performed live. Up next, the mouth-watering prospect of Riverside on the pool stage. Although it was very windy, nothing stopped the crowd from filling the covered pool area for this upbeat set. The band played a great selection of songs including some from ‘Shrine of New Generation Slaves.’ At one point they broke into Deep Purple’s ‘Black Night’ with the crowd yelling ‘Hey! Four gentlemen with t-shirts with large letters spelling ‘Riverside’ were acknowledged from the stage.

Climbing and exploring the limestone rocks while relishing in the refreshing pools along the way. For the more adventurous, there’s swimming with dolphins, plunging through twists and turns on a rainforest bobsled, getting wet n dirty in a dune buggy in the Jamaican woodlands, or racing through the trees on a series of ziplines near Dunn’s River Falls. The ship for this year was the familiar Norwegian Pearl, having previously hosted multiple CTTE’s as well as Mike Portnoy’s only Progressive Nation At Sea Cruise ten years earlier. Over 2,000 passengers sold out this year’s edition faster than ever before, though admittedly this was a smaller ship than 2022’s Cruise.

I just missed Saga on the pool stage but was in the elevator with Michael Sadler on the way down, while the occupants applauded him personally. Jakko Jakszyk deserved a larger crowd than he got in his Theater show, (though Pete Trewavas and other stars were there) and after an hour’s delay, The Flower Kings proceeded to give the last non-passenger show of the cruise to rapturous applause. ‘Run no more’ said MC Jon Kirkman, who assured the crowd that ‘We are definitely coming back next year.’ TFK played a broad selection of material spanning their history all the way back to ‘Flower Power.’ Including several epics. While Hasse Froberg was in particularly fine voice for this late gig, Stolt’s voice was, in his own words only ‘half-back’ but more than adequate when he chose to sing. After TFK, the folks at Late Night Live assiduously took it home, playing long into the night. Day 4 presented many interesting choices, especially in the photo-op department, but I chose to attend the live shows.

The public on-sale is available now with cabins starting at $1,397 per person for double occupancy via the voyage’s website. The next stop, Perfect Day at CocoCay, is a private destination located in the Bahamas that’s exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests. Plus, the Perfect Day at CocoCay offers loads of food options to fuel up at in-between adventures, and access to the exclusive Coco Beach Club® includes elevated Mediterranean flavors paired with breathtaking ocean views. This cruise was so jam-packed (despite the absence of Yes) that it all went very quickly, and before you knew it, it was over.

Adrian Belew rocked the pool stage in an appropriate Panama hat and a tropical shirt that he apparently wore in David Bowie’s band. As Adrian said, ‘Two shows in and I love this band already.’ The crowd agreed. With just enough time for the rescheduled Transatlantic Q&A, I heard the guys in lively and humorous form, especially Ted Leonard and Neal Morse.

The lineup also includes returning acts Riverside, Saga, The Flower Kings, Adrian Belew, Haken, Pendragon and many more, alongside debuts by Al Stewart, King’s X, McStine and Minnemann, Pattern-Seeking Animals, and more. The Prog Report’s Roie Avin and long-time CTTE host Jon Kirkman will host the event. Durga even brought the house down with an incendiary reading of “Cult of Personality”. Pattern-Seeking Animals played some of their first live concerts ever, finally airing music from the three albums they had recorded over the past three years.

Their first set had some technical issues resulting in a few start/stops which frustrated front-man Hogarth but ultimately resulted in a powerhouse finale of Neverland to channel his emotions. Super-group Transatlantic wrapped up their April tour of new album “The Absolute Universe” with a complete reading of the extended version during one set (including video projections from Christian Rios) and a back-catalog set on the other night. Although Roine Stolt’s voice was under the weather during the Cruise, his guitar playing was fluid as ever and Ted Leonard delivered many of Stolt’s vocal lines in a unique cameo role.
